Role Profile

Our client, an award-winning and niche online retailer specialising in Horticulture, is looking to appoint a Buyer to join their down to earth and friendly head office team based near Preston. This online retailer is expanding rapidly therefore this is a new role within the team where you will report into the Commercial Director and assist in driving the role/ business forward. The ideal candidate will have experience in buying for an e-commerce retailer and a commercial eye as you will be required to identify new product areas to complement the existing ranges, broadening the offering as the business expands. You will have the ability to forge strong working relationships with existing and new suppliers across the UK, Europe and potentially the Far East. This is a fantastic opportunity for a driven Buyer to join an already successful and fast growing online retailer with the opportunity to drive your own progression forward. A genuine interest in horticulture or a desire to learn more about this area is essential.


  • Purchasing stock in line with specified cost, quality and delivery targets
  • Negotiating contracts, improving prices and terms of business with suppliers and reviewing these regularly to make operational and financial improvements
  • Building and managing relationships with current suppliers, maintaining regular communication, whilst also seeking out new suppliers to meet demand
  • Developing a supplier strategy, minimising risk to the business
  • Keeping ahead of market trends, availability and competitor strategies
  • Product development to expand range of associated products or business opportunities which would suit customer profile
  • Making quick commercial decisions to ensure operations are not delayed by stock shortages
  • Providing constructive feedback to our suppliers
  • Supplier and product compliance
  • Implementing a product sign off process
  • Working in collaboration with the Commercial Team to communicate any supply problems or risks that may impact on business operations
  • Work in collaboration with the merchandiser and the Commercial Director to ensure a product supply that fits the expansion plans for the business.
  • Range planning and sourcing stock when exceeding contractual commitment
  • Visiting suppliers, European trade shows and potential travel to the Far East in future

Skills, Experience & Personal Attributes

  • E-commerce retail buying experience is essential
  • A strong understanding of the customer journey when shopping online
  • An interest in horticulture or desire to learn more about this area
  • Strong negotiation skills/ margin control
  • Confident with the ability to make decisions under pressure
  • Analytical and numerical with a keen eye for detail
  • Ability to forge and maintain strong relationships with suppliers
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with others in the wider business
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • Happy to muck-in as this seasonal business experiences quieter trading periods
