£45000.00 - £50000.00 per annum + Bonus

Expectations for this role:

  • To ensure that businesses category management is in line with market trends and expectations.
  • To effectively co-ordinate and manage the phased development of the Category Management function for the business.
  • To manage, motivate and develop the Category Management team to deliver a complete, workable category management solution
  • To produce plans and plan variations, in line with the businesses store format segmentation.
  • To identify range by store format segmentation.
  • To implement planograms, measure and feedback.
  • To plan category reviews & process and devise a calendar in conjunction with the trading department.
  • To understand market trends/internal and external data - e.g. Sales Out data.
  • To effectively manage relationships with relevant suppliers.
  • To produce monthly measurements - e.g. monitor & communicate activities, including category insight.
  • To ensure promotional activity and upsell initiatives are effectively planogrammed.


  • Provide effective leadership for the Category Management team - motivate, develop and manage all functional personnel to achieve high standards.
  • Plan and deliver category management for store formats
  • Plan and deliver a category management system that is easy to operate that delivers great value
  • Promote and encourage the maintenance and development of retailing standards in the Group's portfolio, ensuring both brand continuity and retailer relationship development.
  • Working closely with key contacts and continuously looking to improve on value and benefits offered.
  • Keep abreast of market developments - specifically marketing, trading, supply chain and store development initiatives, taking into account social, economic, demographic, product and category development trends.
  • Liaise and interact effectively with relevant internal departments.
  • Identify and deliver effective marketing and advertising campaigns to drive and maximise usage of the Category Management system.
  • Act as an ambassador within the industry, ensuring that brand and values are communicated and represented professionally, accurately and effectively at all times.
  • Develop and introduce a monthly reporting tool to monitor measure and report on Category Management activities, identifying strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats.
  • Develop and implement an annual/quarterly 'by category' review process to optimise usage.
  • Continue to review, refine and develop the Category Management system to maintain the best deliverable system.
  • Identify and drive through new viable commercial opportunities within Category management
  • Manage budget forecasting and control, ensuring that all key financial targets and KPI's are achieved.
  • Liaise with the Symbol group field based team to ensure accurate and full implementation of store Category plans in member stores.
  • Work closely with the internal IT team to ensure continued successful operation of the Category Management system.


  • In depth knowledge and understanding of the retail sector, product categories and market forces.
  • An understanding of different store formats and segments to ensure that they are all captured and delivered with strong category management.
  • Excellent knowledge, understanding and use of the Category Management system, processes and principles.
  • Clear and effective communication skills at all levels - verbally, in writing and using data.
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing ability.
  • Confident public speaker; presentation skills.
  • Promotes and enables accountability and responsibility within the team.
  • Excellent organisational and systems management ability.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and manage own workload.
  • Good commercial awareness; ability to anticipate and react to current and future market needs.
