Role Profile

Our client, an award-winning and leading supplier of high quality, mid-market products to the electrical industry, is looking to appoint an enthusiastic, driven and creative Product Development Manager to join their head office team based in Bedfordshire. An ambitious business growing 30% YOY, this is a new role as they expand therefore the ideal candidate will come into the role with innovative ideas on how to expand the lighting ranges further. The business prides themselves on providing high quality, mid-market soft commercial lighting and is well-respected within the industry, winning 'Best Customer Service Award' from customers due to their reputation for excellent stock levels and customer service. It is essential that the right candidate can demonstrate extensive expertise in sourcing, specifically LED and soft commercial (other areas will be a bonus). This is very much a creative sourcing role, therefore a genuine passion for lighting is essential as you will know exactly what is happening in the lighting market in order to make suggestions of new products for the catalogue. This is a fantastic opportunity for a strong negotiator with commercial awareness and a creative flair to join a market-leading and fast-paced business and make an impact within this close-knit and dynamic team.


  • Negotiating with suppliers
  • Attending trade shows and meeting with suppliers
  • Attending Far East trips 3-4 times a year (may be at short notice)
  • Supporting the marketing team in regards to packaging decisions, ensuring new products are ready for market and catalogue launch
  • Provide regular feedback, contributing to review of product range
  • Undertaking competitor research
  • Source & develop appropriate and profitable lighting product ranges
  • Provide Product Development Director with updates & reports
  • Ensure products meet required industry standards, applying knowledge of current British & EC lighting legislative requirements
  • Work closely with various departments within agreed timeframes relating to catalogue launches etc.

Skills, Experience & Personal Attributes

  • Extensive lighting sourcing is essential including LED
  • Contemporary, decorative domestic and soft commercial lighting would be advantageous
  • A proven track record of overseeing the introduction of new products into a business from inception to launch
  • Far East sourcing/ travel experience
  • Regular liaison with international contacts with a well-developed cultural awareness
  • Proven decision making experience
  • Managing costs
  • A creative flair and the ability to bring fresh, innovative ideas is key
  • Confident to challenge and be challenged
  • Strong sourcing and negotiation skills
  • Good standard of general education
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment/ adapt quickly to change
  • Flexible, can-do attitude and not afraid to muck-in
  • Ability to forge strong working relationships

  • Passion and flair for lighting products
  • Strong communication and IT skills
