Senior Traffic Planner

Location: Derby

We're recruiting on behalf of a well-established and growing logistics business for a Senior Traffic Planner to join their busy transport operation in Derby. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role within the planning team, ensuring vehicles, drivers and customer deliveries are managed efficiently while maintaining exceptional service levels and legal compliance.

The Role

As Senior Traffic Planner, you will take ownership of the daily transport plan, ensuring the efficient utilisation of vehicles and drivers while responding quickly to operational challenges. Working closely with the Transport Manager and wider operations team, you'll help drive operational performance, support junior planners where required, and contribute to continuous improvement across the transport function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and optimise daily vehicle routes and driver schedules to maximise fleet utilisation and service performance.
  • Produce efficient routing plans for both full load and groupage deliveries using a Transport Management System (TMS).
  • Demonstrate excellent geographical knowledge of the UK road network to ensure efficient route planning.
  • Ensure compliance with Drivers' Hours Regulations, Working Time Directive and tachograph legislation.
  • Allocate work based on vehicle availability, driver hours, customer requirements and delivery priorities.
  • Monitor live transport operations, proactively resolving delays, breakdowns, road closures and other disruptions.
  • Communicate with drivers throughout the day, providing route support and operational updates.
  • Liaise with subcontractors, agencies and external transport partners to maintain service levels.
  • Monitor fleet availability, maintenance schedules and resource planning.
  • Record and investigate operational issues, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Produce transport performance reports and support operational KPI delivery.
  • Assist with mentoring and supporting less experienced members of the planning team.

About You

The successful candidate will have experience working within a busy transport planning environment and enjoy making quick, commercially focused decisions in a fast-moving operation.

You'll ideally have:

  • Previous experience as a Senior Traffic Planner, Traffic Planner or Transport Planner.
  • Strong geographical knowledge of the UK road network.
  • Experience planning both full load and groupage transport operations.
  • Excellent understanding of Drivers' Hours, Working Time Directive and transport compliance.
  • Experience using Transport Management Systems (TMS).
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to balance customer service and operational efficiency.
  • Good Microsoft Excel and general IT skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the confidence to build relationships with drivers, customers and internal stakeholders.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt quickly to changing priorities.
