Transport Planner

Location: Oxford | Salary: £36,000 - £38,000

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Transport Planner to join a well-established and growing business within the environmental and waste management sector.

With over 50 years of industry experience, the business has built a strong reputation for delivering reliable, high-quality services and is continuing to invest in its people and operations.

This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive and commercially minded Transport Planner to take ownership of daily transport planning activities, helping to improve operational efficiency, maximise vehicle utilisation and deliver a consistently high level of customer service.

The Role

Working closely with the Transport Manager, you will be responsible for coordinating daily transport operations, planning routes and ensuring the effective allocation of vehicles and drivers.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and coordinating daily skip and RoRo deliveries, collections and exchanges.
  • Optimising routes and vehicle allocations to maximise driver and vehicle utilisation.
  • Identifying opportunities to reduce mileage, fuel consumption, overtime and unnecessary transport costs.
  • Managing daily schedules and adapting plans in response to changing operational requirements.
  • Communicating with drivers, customer service, sales and operational teams to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Resolving day-to-day transport issues, including access difficulties, failed deliveries and rerouting.
  • Conducting daily driver briefings and debriefings, monitoring job completion and addressing operational discrepancies.
  • Maintaining accurate transport records and supporting compliance with relevant transport and Health & Safety requirements.

About You

To be successful in this position, you will ideally have:

  • At least 2 years' experience within a Transport Planning, Routing or Scheduling role.
  • Experience of route optimisation, vehicle allocation and driver scheduling.
  • A good understanding of UK transport legislation, including Drivers' Hours and Working Time Regulations.
  • Experience using Transport Management Systems (TMS) and route planning software.
  • Good geographical knowledge of Oxfordshire and the surrounding areas.
  • Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • A commercially aware approach, with the ability to identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Experience within waste management, skip hire, RoRo or a similar transport environment would be advantageous. Transport-related qualifications, such as a Transport Manager CPC or OLAT, would also be beneficial.

What's on Offer?

  • Salary of £36,000 - £38,000.
  • 24 days' annual leave plus Bank Holidays.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Company events.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Free flu vaccinations.
  • On-site parking.
  • PPE and uniform provided where required.

Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00am - 4:30pm (45 hours per week).
