Role Profile

The Head of Buying will lead the department, ensuring the product offering is the best in the market, perfect for the end user in every aspect, whilst delivering commercial results.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other members of the senior management team to drive the daily operation of the business, and also support the delivery of key strategic projects which contribute to its growth across multiple channels and markets

  • Leadership of the buying department to consistently deliver day to day trading KPIs, and progress strategic projects.
  • Management of the buying team, including recruitment and development to ensure skills are in place to deliver department plans.
  • Identify market and product opportunities, incorporating these in range reviews to optimise financial performance and enhance product ranges.
  • Overarching responsibility for product range, including cradle to grave product lifecycle planning, NPD processes, and category management.
  • Controlling product pricing policies across all brands and channels, modelling and communicating clearly any anticipated changes in achieved margin and revenue.
  • Ownership of cost and margin data, ensuring the buying team collate, and maintain financial records for internal landed costing, and legal & regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and maintain department 5 year plan; from category level financial planning & budgets to sourcing and supply strategy.
  • Evaluating risks, and implementing mitigating actions within international and domestic supply chains.
  • Periodic review and effective negotiation of key supplier contracts.
  • Support the buying team with building robust supplier relationships, OTIF delivery, capacity optimisation and long term strategic partnerships.

Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will have a strong retail background, be currently operating at Buying Manager or Head of Buying level, with the following demonstrable skills:

  • Energy, passion and a track record of leading and developing a buying team.
  • Fantastic people skills; an effective communicator across all levels of the business and supply chain.
  • Ability to lead a department at pace delivering multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Confidence in presenting proposals and plans to the senior management team & Exec.
  • High level of numeracy, with the competence to create and interrogate financial models.
  • Proficient in Excel to at least intermediate level.
  • Sound judgement and commercial awareness.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Highly organised with experience in creating and presenting high level category plans and forecasts
