Hotseat: Daniel Kirk on his career in recruitment

We sat down with Dan for a chat about why he chose a career in recruitment and what he thinks of the role so far.
1. What attracted you most about a career in recruitment?
Originally the main factor for me was the earning potential but now I would say it's more about the project work and the ability to map out your own day in relation to the different situations you face, such as client visits and prioritising your own day plan; not really being scripted.
2. How would you describe the beginning of your career in recruitment?
I would probably describe the beginning in any kind of job really to be the most challenging part. Coming into a new environment and a new career path where you’re getting an understanding of exactly what the jobs is, whilst at the same time finding out all of the information that you need to learn to be successful at the job.
3. What has been your biggest success in recruitment so far?
I think my biggest success has been actually billing within the first 8 weeks on the job. I went to my first ever client meeting solo and managed to pick up a vacancy from that as a retained assignment.
4. How would you describe your working environment?
I think the working environment is quite relaxed, you’re very much left to your own devices. It’s a mature environment where everyone is treated as an adult and it’s your own responsibility to prioritise your work and manage your region as if it’s your own business. But, at the same, if you’re slacking then it’s going to be noticed!
5. What do you think makes a good recruitment consultant?
I think a good recruitment consultant is someone with a personality, not just the ability to speak to people but also to understand people and get them on board and to buy-in to you as a consultant and what you’ve got to offer. At the same time attention detail is really important along with patience and a good work ethic.
6. What is the most rewarding aspect of the job?
My favourite thing about the job is not always being in the office; I think that people get quite bored of simply being in the office 9-5. In recruitment, if you’re with the right agency you have the opportunity to get out of the office and meet with people, your clients and candidates.
