Yard Manager

The Opportunity

An established and fast-paced operational business is looking to recruit a hands-on Yard Manager to oversee multiple busy yard locations across Greater Manchester.

This is a key operational role focused on maintaining safe, compliant, and efficient yard operations while leading teams and driving high standards across all activities. The successful candidate will take ownership of day-to-day yard performance, Health & Safety compliance, housekeeping standards, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day operations across multiple yard locations.
• Ensure safe loading, unloading, and vehicle movements throughout the yards.
• Enforce Health & Safety procedures, PPE compliance, and safe working practices.
• Monitor pedestrian and vehicle segregation to minimise risks.
• Ensure lifting operations are planned and completed safely in line with regulations.
• Carry out regular safety inspections, audits, and compliance checks.
• Promote proactive hazard and near-miss reporting across the team.
• Ensure all incidents and unsafe conditions are reported and addressed promptly.
• Verify all equipment, including FLTs and sideloaders, is safe, inspected, and fit for use.
• Ensure pre-use equipment checks are completed accurately and consistently.
• Remove faulty equipment from service and coordinate repairs when required.
• Maintain high housekeeping standards across all yard areas.
• Oversee yard teams across multiple shifts to ensure standards are maintained consistently.
• Monitor stock movements, yard organisation, and operational activity.
• Maintain operational records, checklists, and Excel-based tracking systems.
• Identify operational inefficiencies and implement practical improvements.
• Communicate effectively with internal departments including Transport and Warehouse operations.
• Lead, motivate, and hold teams accountable for performance and compliance standards.

About You

• Previous experience within a Yard Manager, Yard Supervisor, Depot, Logistics, or Transport environment.
• Strong understanding of yard operations and operational safety standards.
• Excellent Health & Safety awareness and compliance knowledge.
• Experience managing teams within fast-paced operational environments.
• Confident challenging poor standards and unsafe behaviours.
• Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
• Comfortable using Excel and operational tracking systems.
• Proactive, hands-on, and solutions-focused approach.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work across multiple departments.
