The skills required

Chief marketing officer jobs usually require several years’ experience at a high level in a marketing role. While it’s preferable that the previous CMO jobs were in the same sector, or a related one, that’s not always an essential, as many of the skills involved with managing a team and handling strategies are transferable.

All CMOs need an analytical mindset and an ability to keep an eye on trends in what is an ever-changing discipline. With new ideas constantly emerging, especially in digital, they will be as good a listener and learner as they are an instructor.

Today, many of the industrial buildings have been converted to offices and flats, although the port still sees millions of tonnes of cargo pass through every year.

Much of the local economy is now based in the service sector and IT. Adastral Park is a massive business park, home to BT's global innovation and development centre, while other tech companies with offices in the area include Fujitsu, Ericsson, Cisco, O2 and Nokia Siemens.
