The Brief

At Abbey there is a huge focus on the development of the Divisional team at all levels in order to achieve the objectives set by the board. As a “commercially led” their requirement was for the operations team to catch up and work in tandem with the sales team to provide strategy and direction.

  • Ensuring full legal compliance across all sites.
  • Reviewing current performance in line with targeted SLA’s.
  • Cost effective resource management.
  • Budget & P&L Management – transactional/closed book accounts.
  • Provide operational support to the Commercial team.
  • Provide solid strategic support to the Board of Directors.
  • Successful integration of new business, and increasing customer volumes.
  • Performance Management of the Divisional team – circa 250 employees.
  • Driving a culture of Continuous Improvement across the network.

The Challenges

The client was looking to recruit a new Operations Director - a  key position responsible for improving efficiencies. The main challenge with this assignment was the ability to bring the commercial and operations teams together, synchronising their efforts to ensure that all sales and commercial activities were directed in a market sector where ALG are operationally strong therefore, maximising network efficiency.

  • The Client requires all its managers to be exceptional operators as all of their management and board level directors play hands-on roles within the business.
  • They also required the individual to have a high commercial awareness of the sector, and wider logistics market, which was something they felt appears to be lacking within the industry as a whole.

Our Approach

  • After meeting with the Directors of ALG, we agreed to manage this project as a Retained assignment.
  • We ensured we gained a complete understanding of the company's culture and operations.
  • We researched the company's business stratgey and vision.
  • We used a number of research / resourcing techniques to find the right candidate including; Database Searching, Advertising, and Executive Search.

The Results

We delivered this senior assignment on time, in line with our agreed project plan. The entire recruitment process from Client sign off to the successful candidate starting taking just 5 weeks in total.

Cast have also recruited at director, management and traffic planner levels for ALG's business and these appointments have been across all 3 divisions of their operations.

In addition, ALG's industry knowledge has improved as a result of this placement, resulting in a greater focus on Health and Safety.

    Working with the Abbey Logistics Group is a great experience, they are an entrepreneurial business with a passion for customer satisfaction.  The tanker division accounts for 70% of their business and as such, this was a key appointment.  The Directors were very clear on their expectations, and the requirements of the role.  It was clear that the candidate needed to have the ability to comfortably manage the existing operations, but have the head space to grow in line with the businesses growth plans.  Following our meeting, and clear channels of communication throughout the recruitment process we were able to successfully place the right candidate within 5 weeks of the project being signed off.
