It doesn’t matter if a company operates within the IT, healthcare, manufacturing, food and beverage, medical, defence, transport or retail industry - careful planning and logistical organisation is essential for success.

Operations Directors play an important part in ensuring everything runs smoothly. They work to develop various parts of the supply chain and are responsible for keeping all activities to budget, on schedule and within quality expectations.

By continually monitoring key performance indicators, devising new strategies and implementing changes, the Operations Director will be able to ensure not only that the company thrives, but also that customers are happy with the service.

Of course, you will be in charge of a team - responsible for ensuring members of staff are properly trained, motivated and doing the right tasks to the expected standard.

The skills required

Those applying for roles as Operations Directors should be excellent communicators with good negotiation, organisation and management skills. A strong commercial and financial awareness is essential and an understanding of the employer’s particular sector can also be advantageous.

Depending on the role, a willingness to travel on short notice may be necessary, while foreign language fluency can also be beneficial.

No matter which job you apply for, however, you should be a highly motivated self-starter who has a strong drive to improve results and who can deal with high-stress situations with ease.
